Chicago 1884!
Fred Goss having received patents on two of his ‘press improvement’ inventions, together with his brother Sam, build a prototype with the aim of securing financial backing to launch into production their first roll fed press, printing on both sides of the web.
They were certain such a press would print newspapers more swiftly and efficiently than most of the others then in use.
The ‘Goss printing press company’ was established in 1885.
By 1891 the ‘Straightline’ press, running multiple webs at 20,000 cph had made a dramatic impact on U.S. newspapers
